MOSQUEFEST 2010
turn on any news program lately and you’re bound to see some stuff about important news. y’know…the gulf oil spill, the two wars we’re in, stuff like that. only to actually get to that news you now have to sit through news about fear. fear of gays. fear of mexicans. fear of muslims.
as you’ve undoubtedly heard by now, there are plans to build a mosque just a few blocks from where the planes hit the towers in new york city. this makes a lot of people mad. because…y’know…it’s ALL muslims who should be blamed for what happened that fateful day, right?
blaming all muslims for what happened that day is like blaming all christians for the acts of the KKK.
in case you didn’t already know, there’s already a mosque in that area. in case you didn’t already know, it’s been there since before the world trade center was ever built. in case you didn’t already know, there are a lot of muslims who live and go to church in that area. in case you didn’t already know, muslims died in the towers on 9/11 just like anyone else did.
but no. all muslims are bad and should be punished and treated differently because of the acts of a handful of crazies who attacked us and plot to do it again.
do you know why they attack us? they do so because they follow people like osama bin laden who tell them that america and the western world hate muslims and will do anything in their power to make sure that muslims are no more. and what do we do in turn? well gosh darnit let’s just start hatin some muslims and play right into his plans. play right into his plans like we did when we went to war. the man has gone on record in saying that the grand plan was to lure the united states into an endless war that will take away tons of our money and time and just weaken us and weaken us and weaken us to the point where we’re completely concentrating on the wrong things. score 2 for bin laden now i guess. the man definitely knows how to play mind games with america.
think about this for a second. all we have to do to prove him and his ilk wrong is to NOT punish all muslims. to stand up for one of the things this country was FOUNDED on. the freedom to worship whichever religion you want. that’s ALL WE HAVE TO DO. but no. we’re giving dude exactly what he wants AGAIN. he says we hate all muslims. so in turn we start to hate all muslims. genius.
i’d say we’re headed towards holy war but the saddest part is that a good portion of the people who are against muslims aren’t even religious people themselves at all. it’s gotten to the point where muslims are being talked about as if they’re a race of people and not a religion. god help us. pun intended.
another sad irony is that the building being protested against isn’t even just a mosque. it’s a community center that’s designed to promote a better understanding BETWEEN FAITHS so that we can move towards a society where christians and muslims and jews and lions and tigers and bears can all live together peacefully. and here we are as a people protesting against THAT idea. oh my.
and now over this past weekend our president came out and said that they should be able to build it because of freedom of religion. and now people are hating it (and him) even more. as if the man doesn’t have a fucking point. i for one applaud him for not feeding into the fear. but hey this is the same man that while he was running for president had to face the question every day of whether or not he was a muslim himself. and NO ONE bothered to even ask what should’ve been the most important question…so fuckin what if he was?
now we got republican politicians sayin that obama being for the building of the mosque is gonna be a campaign issue for them in the days to come. yeah this is gonna be awesome. let’s ramp up our muslim fear even more. hoorah. there’s even leaders out there saying that NO more mosques should be built in this country AT ALL. it’s not just the “ground zero mosque” that’s being protested against. that’s just the tip of the xenophobic iceberg. the ground zero itself of mosque protesting. #neverforget
i don’t expect to change any minds here. this is one of those issues where once you’re on one side you tend to stay there. you should ask yourself WHY you’re on that side though.
people say that using the freedom of religion argument is simply missing the point. that even beyond that it’s insensitive to build it so close to ground zero. i say to those people that YOU’RE missing the point because you’re blaming ALL muslims for the acts of a handful of radicals.
point blank, they’re allowed to build a mosque there. just the same way that someone else would be allowed to build a church or a synogogue. it’s freedom of religion and it’s one of the things our country was founded on. so let me end this with an argument that has been used against liberal hippie pussies like me for as long as i can remember…
love it or leave it. you don’t like it? get the hell out.
